完型填空作為考研英語的第一道大題，從2002年開始改名為“Use of English”以來，作為考研英語一個考查20幾年歷史的題型，應該說題型已經固定，而本題的正確解答也會為后面題的解答打下良好的心理優勢。
要想取得完型的高分，勢必首先了解英文的行文習慣。與漢語相比，英語表達更為直接，因而英語里有很多文章結構開門見山，除此以外，英文邏輯結構嚴謹、每段都圍繞一個中心展開，論證嚴密。當然，英漢之間一個更為明顯的差異即是英語行文的多元化特征，即上文表達一個概念用一個詞，下文再出現同一詞時一定會用近義詞、同義詞等反復替換。而漢語則不同，漢語更偏向于重復同一概念。英文多元、漢語重復的東西方兩種語言差異，也就成為了命題人的青睞。也即是我們解題所謂的“線索詞”。
例如，下面一篇完形填空題，所有標黃色的詞都表達同一概念“工作”，把握了這一關鍵點，也就不難理解第1題和第7題的答案了。

完型填空是一篇結構嚴密、語義完整的短文，按照大綱規定，英語(一)大綱規定，文章總長度為250詞，英語(二)大綱規定，文章總長度為350詞.長度上來說，英語二比英語一要長，字數要多。但無論從詞匯難度、句式結構、話題范圍、篇章結構上來說，英語(一)都明顯高于英語(二)。
